Two Norfolk businesses team up for Chelsea Flower Show

Further to their successful collaboration and Gold Medal at the RHS flower show at Chatsworth House last summer, Mongers Architectural Salvage are teaming up again with Thorncroft Clematis of Reymerston, to create a show stopping exhibit for the RHS Chelsea Flower show in May.

Mongers have started work on creating a small garden for inside the Chelsea Grand Pavilion which will feature 50 varieties and over 600 clematis plants grown by Thorncroft. The display theme for the garden is the fine Norwich firm of Boulton and Paul, who from 1864 to 1968 were general manufacturers at the Rose Lane works in Norwich, specialising, for a large part, in wooden buildings and associated iron work. The centrepiece of the garden will be a 1920’s revolving summerhouse.

Thorncroft Clematis, who are already have 10 gold medals at Chelsea will display their Clematis trained up interesting structures such as a Victorian dog run, water bowsers, gates and railings all sourced from Mongers extensive stock of fine garden antiques and made by Boulton & Paul. They will have a number of new varieties to unveil at the show including a stunning new bell-shaped clematis Prince William ‘Zo08171’PBR  which will be the centre piece of the plant feature called “A Royal Celebration” a collection of clematis with connections to royalty.

Sam Coster of Mongers explained “it is a perfect marriage, architectural salvage and climbing plants. The colour and beauty of the clematis is very much enhanced against fine antique wrought iron work. Boulton & Paul made many items for gardens and, being a local firm, seemed a perfect backdrop to our local nurseries plants.”

Peter Skeggs-Gooch from Thorncroft added…. “Following the stunning display we created together at the very first RHS Chatsworth Flower Show will be hard enough, but we have also chosen to really push ourselves with a demanding and hopefully inspirational exhibit for Chelsea this year. We are delighted to be working with Mongers again because Sam & Louise have proven to be very creative and have put in a huge amount of effort while helping us achieve the standard of finish we will require for another Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medal”.
